Since there is a lot of free time available in prison, they start to read up on spiritual things. Most black people became Muslims in the prison, actually they didn't become Muslim, they were recruited by Nation of Islam members. They were taught how God is black, and how blacks are superior to whites while also borrowing some elements from Islam. When these blacks came out of jail, and they read about it, they gradually started to notice that it's not the real deal. So they become real Muslims.
