Things are looking good! The foot looks rather grim on the outside, but the bone is still alive and is healing at a steady clip. My cast has been replaced with a boot called a cam-walker, which can be removed for showers. After they cut the cast off, they sent me to radiology for x-rays, but I stopped in a bathroom and washed my foot in the sink. I got a funny look from a guy who walked in while I was doing it, but I explained that it hadn’t been clean in a month and a half. The doctor didn’t make any promises, but I may not need additional surgery. I have another month of non-weight-bearing, and then I start physical therapy. With luck (and a high pain tolerance) I should be able to recover most of my range of motion. I can stand physical pain pretty well, though. It’s the emotional distress that’s been an issue, and that just lightened considerably. There’s still a possibility that they’ll have to lengthen the calf-muscle or change the shape of other bones in the foot, but I won’t know that until I work at therapy for a while. Whenever I would have any surgery done I would always tell the Dr. that vicoden wasn't strong enough so I would usually get prescribled oxycodone. A couple of those babies and a stiff drink and I was good to go. A friend of mine (we're not friends anymore) offered to do the driving one night when we were going to a party. I gave him the keys before we even left his house. I got piss-drunk (my BAC was .17), so I didn't notice that he drank even more (his BAC was .23). The accident reconstruction the police did showed that he was driving at least 70mph in a 30mph zone, and slowed to 50mph for a 90 degree right turn at a T intersection. The car went more or less straight, and hit a tree. The car had yawed clockwise slightly, so when the engine came through the firewall, it wound up on my lap. It took almost an hour to cut me out of the car. I had three broken ribs and a cracked sternum from the seatbelt. Also broken: Nose, all five metatarsals in my right foot, left femoral head (the part of the femur that fits into the pelvis), left fibula, left tibia (in two places) and left talus (the bone in the foot that's the bottom half of the ankle joint). Also, my left hip was dislocated. I have a rod and two screws in my left tibia, and a screw in the talus that they put in in January. There was so much trauma to the ankle that that they didn't see the break in the talus until I'd been walking on it for a few months. They told me the pain was "mild arthritis". I remember everything normally up to about a half hour after we showed up. After that it's patchy. It wasn't even out of tune! If you own a guitar, I highly recommend you by a Gator brand case for it. They cost between $100 and $150, but after the accident I consider it well worth the expense.
